- A bacteria that lives in the vagina. It can overgrow and cause symptoms of infection.
- An infection more commonly found in women
- Symptoms may include vaginal discharge and a strong smell.
- You may also have itching or pain around the vagina as well as swelling
- Symptoms may be caused by bacteria spread during sex or it could be due to strong chemicals or soaps
- Bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted infection

- Testing and treatment is free at the health unit
- Male partners are not usually treated. If bacterial vaginosis keeps recurring, they may be treated as well.
To prevent vaginal infections
- Wear clean, loose-fitting clothes made from natural materials [eg, cotton, linen]
- Avoid tight pants, pantyhose and leggings
- Avoid douches or scented pads and tampons
