Bacterial Vaginosis

  • A bacteria that lives in the vagina. It can overgrow and cause symptoms of infection.
  • An infection more commonly found in women
  • Symptoms may include vaginal discharge and a strong smell.
  • You may also have itching or pain around the vagina as well as swelling
  • Symptoms may be caused by bacteria spread during sex or it could be due to strong chemicals or soaps
  • Bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted infection

Testing and treatment

  • You must see a clinic nurse and doctor. For Clinic Hours Click Here
  • Testing and treatment is free at the health unit
  • Male partners are not usually treated. If bacterial vaginosis keeps recurring, they may be treated as well.

To prevent vaginal infections

  • Wear clean, loose-fitting clothes made from natural materials [eg, cotton, linen]
  • Avoid tight pants, pantyhose and leggings
  • Avoid douches or scented pads and tampons
