- Bacterial infection spread by having sex
- Once infected this bacteria continues to live in the vagina and the penis and can spread throughout the reproductive organs
- It is very common not to have any symptoms when you have chlamydia
You may have some of these symptoms:
- Discharge from the penis or vagina
- Burning feeling when you urinate
- Abdominal pain
- Pain or swelling in the testicles
- Women make experience
- Pain during sex
- Bleeding after sex
- Bleeding between periods
If left untreated chlamydia, can cause PID ( pelvic inflammatory disease), ectopic pregnancy and Infertility in women. In men, untreated Chlamydia can cause a condition called Epididymitis or result in sterility.

- Testing and treatment is free and confidential at the health unit
- If you have chlamydia, you will be given free antibiotics that will cure chlamydia
- If you have been treated for chlamydia, you are not to have sex for three weeks
- Chlamydia does not go away by itself; it must be treated
- Contact tracing, must take place. Your sexual partners need to be notified and come in to clinic for testing and treatment.
