Herpes Simplex Virus

  • Viral infection spread by having any skin to skin contact during sex
  • Herpes sores on the skin are called an herpes outbreak
  • Is sometimes spread by direct skin to skin contact with open sores
  • Herpes can be spread when you do not have sores. This occurs because the virus also lives on the skin, not just in the sores
  • Herpes outbreaks may appear again and again for the rest of your life
  • You may have some symptoms just before the sores appear. These include tingling and itching in the genital area.
  • These symptoms may last 2 to 3 weeks. Sometimes fever and headache also occur.

Female

 

Sores in or around the vagina or bum, or maybe the thighs and bum

 

Tender lumps in the groin, because the glands may swell

Male

 

Sores on penis, testicles or bum, or maybe the thighs and bum

 

Tender lumps in the groin, because the glands may swell

Testing and treatment

  • You must see a clinic nurse and doctor. For Clinic Hours Click Here
  • Testing and treatment is free at the health unit
  • There is no cure for herpes
  • If you have Herpes, you may be given a prescription for medication to lessen the symptoms and the length of time you have the sores.
