Pubic Lice
Pubic Lice
Pubic lice are tiny insects spread from an infected person to you after having close contact including sex.
Pubic lice can also be spread from using bed sheets or towels or wearing clothes of an infected person
Symptoms occur when the insects bite you
Symptoms may include:
Itching in the pubic area
Scabs in the pubic area
You may see very small, brown insects in your pubic hair
You may also see small, white eggs, called nits, on pubic hair
Testing and treatment
You must see a clinic nurse and doctor.

Testing and treatment is free at the health unit
Pubic lice is treated with special creams and lotions available in drugstores
Avoid close body contact with others if you have pubic lice until treatment is complete
Clothes and bed linens must be dry-cleaned or washed in hot water.
Clothes or blankets not washed or dry cleaned can be stored in air-tight plastic bags for two weeks. This will also kill the insects and their eggs
Your sexual partners need to be told and should go to the doctor
You should also inform anyone with whom you had close contact or who has shared your bed sheets, clothes or towels. They should be treated even if they don't have any symptoms
