Yeast Infection

  • A vaginal infection caused by too much yeast
  • Yeast infections are more common in women
  • Birth control pills, antibiotics, some foods or hormone changes [eg, pregnancy] may cause yeast to overgrow
  • If you have a yeast infection, your partner may find his penis gets red and itchy after sex

Symptoms may include

  • Itching or pain around the vagina
  • Redness and swelling around the vagina
  • Pain during sex or when you urinate
  • Thick, white discharge
  • Unusual odor

Testing and Treatment

  • If you are not sure that you have a yeast infection, you should see a doctor
  • If you are sure you have a yeast infection you may buy yeast medication without a prescription. These are available in drugstores.

To lower the risk of vaginal infections

  • Wear clean, loose-fitting clothes made from natural materials [eg, cotton.linen]
  • Avoid tight pants, pantyhose and leggings
  • Avoid douches or scented pads and tampons
