Varieties of Commercial Tobacco
|
There are many different types of tobacco products on the market today. Here are some key differences between the most common.
* In Canada and the US, chew, dip, snuff, snus are often used interchangeably to refer to chewing tobacco. Here you'll learn the real difference.

Cigarette

|
- small roll of cut tobacco
- wrapped in paper
- usually has a filter but not always
- contains over 4,000 other added chemicals
- can cause multiple forms of cancer and respiratory diseases and conditions including emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Cigar

|
- rolled bundle of tobacco
- wrapped in tobacco leaf
- "little cigars" are the size of cigarettes but made in the way of a cigar
- one cigar can have 20 times more ammonia (a cancer causing agent) then cigarettes
- can cause multiple forms of cancer and respiratory diseases and conditions including emphysema and COPD

Cigarillo

|
- cigarillo is spanish for "little cigar"
- in North America, cigarillos are usually small flavoured cigars
- can have filters but not always
- cigarillos are just as dangerous to your health as cigars
- can cause multiple forms of cancer and respiratory diseases and conditions including emphysema and COPD

Chew/Dip

|
- is either in leaf form (and needs to be chewed) or ground form
- typically a pinch of the product is placed between the lip and cheek
- nicotine and other chemicals are absorbed through membranes in your mouth
- 1 tin of chew has the same amount of nicotine as 5.25 packs of cigarettes
- cause cancers of the mouth and throat
- chew/dip is not a safe alternative to smoking

Snuff

|
- similar to dip except that it is a ground substance sniffed through the nose using fingers or a device
- sometimes in Canada snuff is used to refer to chew tobacco
- can be dry or moist
- can cause cancers of the mouth, throat, nose, and other facial areas

Snus

|
- a moist form of snuff that is placed under the upper lip
- the user doesnt typically spit it out
- often comes in the form of a teabag to keep it contained
- comes from Sweden
- causes cancers of the mouth, and throat

Hookah/Shisha/Water Pipe

|
- a device for smoking where the smoke passes through water and inhaled through a hose or pipe
- comes from India
- in one session a person can inhale 100-200 times the smoke of a cigarette
- can cause multiple forms of cancer and respiratory diseases and conditions including emphysema and COPD
- can spread contagious infections such as colds, flus, cold sores etc as the pipes are often shared with others
