Take the Fight out of Food: Nutrition Month 2017

Take the Fight Out of Food

March 1, 2017 - Across Canada, March is Nutrition Month and this year, registered dietitians (RDs) are helping Canadians Take the Fight out of Food. Whether the ‘food fight’ is with themselves or with others, registered dietitians (RDs) want to remind Canadians that eating should be joyful, not a source of everyday frustration.

Food and nutrition can be confusing.  Almost half (49%) of Canadians get their food and nutrition information from the internet, but unfortunately not all facts found online are accurate. It’s often hard to separate fact from fiction and to know which advice to trust. Given the uncertain credibility of online information, Canadians may not be getting accurate nutrition advice, which can exacerbate their food fights and struggles.

You can start to Take the Fight out of Food by looking to Thunder Bay’s Registered Dietitians as the most trusted source for food and nutrition information and advice. By providing correct information and a good support system, they can help you be better equipped to make decisions about food, without the fight. Thunder Bay dietitians have planned a variety of activities across the city to make it easier to find trusted information, and to get individuals and families excited about food:

  • Photo Challenge:
A photo challenge was launched today via social media to encourage people to try new foods, prepare more meals at home, and eat together with family and friends.  A food filled gift basket and other prizes will be awarded.  Anyone can enter by posting their pictures with #NutritionMonthTBay
  • Ask a Registered Dietitian Night:
A speaker event will be hosted by local RDs on Tuesday, March 21 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Sir Winston Churchill C.V.I.Presentations on a variety of current nutrition topics will be offered, as well as the opportunity to speak to RDs from organizations around the city.Registration is available at www.nutritionmonth.eventbrite.ca
