Healthy Kids HOME Initiative Honoured with the Lori Chow Memorial Award

This prestigious award celebrates exceptional health promotion initiatives that make a meaningful difference in individuals’ lives and enhance overall well-being within Ontario.

TBDHU Releases Food Insecurity Report

Getting enough to eat continues to be difficult for many households, as shown in the 2023 Cost of Eating Well in the District of Thunder Bay report, which was officially released by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) yesterday. TBDHU monitors local food affordability by assessing the cost of eating for different household sizes and income scenarios, such as a family of four earning a minimum wage, or a single parent relying on social assistance.

What is measles?

Measles, also called rubeola or red measles, is an infection caused by a virus.  Once quite common, measles can now almost always be prevented with a vaccine.

What ISPA is - And Why it Matters

There’s a K-8 school named after Elsie MacGill in Thunder Bay. Elsie was the world’s first female aeronautical engineer, the first practicing female engineer in Canada, and a lifelong advocate for women and children. During World War II, she oversaw the production of Hawker Hurricanes in Fort William, earning her the nickname of “Queen of the Hurricanes”.

She also nearly died of polio in 1929.

TBDHU’s Northern Fruit and Vegetable Program Presents: Mindful Movement Matters

December 13, 2023 - Grade 8 students in Thunder Bay and District communities will be introduced to mindfulness skills used by athletes on Wednesday December 13, 2023 at Mindful Movement Matters. Youth will learn the benefits of practicing mindfulness, practice visualization techniques, and listen to how these skills are transferable to their everyday lives in school, their personal goals, career, and beyond.

TBDHU ramping up school immunization programming

December 1, 2023 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) is moving forward with its usual process of enforcing the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) to ensure students are protected against vaccine preventable diseases. This includes the review and assessment of all student immunization records, notification to parents/guardians when missing vaccines or missing information, and vaccination clinics to support routine and catch up immunizations.

Respiratory Outbreak Over: Southbridge Roseview – Cheshire Unit

November 9, 2023 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and Southbridge Roseview, confirm that the respiratory outbreak (COVID-19), located at 99 Shuniah St., has been declared over at Southbridge Roseview – Cheshire Unit. All outbreak restrictions have been lifted.

TBDHU recommends the public refrain from visiting hospitals, long-term care facilities and other high risk settings when feeling unwell to avoid spreading infections to those most vulnerable and at higher risk of severe outcomes.
