Dental Screening in Schools

Each year, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit Oral Health Team visits elementary schools across the district to screen children in selected grades. This team consists of a Registered Dental Hygienist and a Dental Health Educator. The hygienist does a visual check of the child’s mouth to identify and follow-up with children who have obvious dental needs. She may also recommend preventive dental services that may be of benefit to your child. The results of this visual screening are sent home to parents on a “Tooth Check” card, along with information for those families who may be eligible for no-cost oral health services.

This service is provided through the Ontario Public Health Standards, as mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Parents of children in selected grades will receive an information letter from the TBDHU before the screening. Not all children will be screened each year.

The screening information collected also helps us evaluate our programs and monitor the dental health of children in the District of Thunder Bay.

If your child missed their screening in the school, you can arrange to have a screening done at the TBDHU clinic in Thunder Bay.
