Respiratory Outbreak Over: Pioneer Ridge Home Area 2 and Home Area 1

August 28, 2023 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and The City of Thunder Bay, confirm that the  respiratory outbreak at Pioneer Ridge Home Area 2 and 1, located at 750 Tungsten St, has been  declared over, as of August 27, 2023. All outbreak restrictions have been lifted. 

TBDHU recommends the public refrain from visiting hospitals, long-term care facilities and other  high risk settings when feeling unwell to avoid spreading infections to those most vulnerable and  at higher risk of severe outcomes.

Respiratory Outbreak Declared: St. Joseph’s Hospital – 2 East - Mental Health Rehabilitation

August 25, 2023 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and St. Joseph’s Care Group, located at 35 Algoma  St. N, confirm that a respiratory outbreak (COVID-19) has been declared at St Joseph’s Hospital – 2 East - Mental Health Rehabilitation.

There are restrictions on admissions, transfers, discharges, social activities and visitation in the  affected area of the facility until further notice. Please call the facility for more information.

Blue-Green Algae Identified at Surprise Lake

August 17, 2023 -  The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has confirmed the presence of blue-green  algae in a water sample collected on August 13, 2023, at Surprise Lake (along the shoreline of the  cottage on Surprise Lake Road West, which is on the southwest side of the southern portion of the  lake). It is important to remember that water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom  is present, and for about 2 weeks after it has dissipated.

August 11, 2023 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and The City of Thunder Bay confirm that the respiratory outbreak previously declared on August 8, 2023 at Pioneer Ridge Home Area 2 has been expanded to include Home Area 1, as of August 10, 2023.
