Health Unit Expands Food Safety Course Offering

media release - in-person food safety course

(Thunder Bay, Ont) - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) is expanding their food safety training to offer an in-person course as an alternative to online. The in-person format provides a supportive learning environment for local food handlers, restaurant staff, and community volunteers to get certified.

"Under section 32 of Ontario's food safety laws, all commercial food service premises must have at least one certified food handler on-site at all times," says Lee Sieswerda, Manager of Environmental Health at TBDHU.

"To help our community meet this requirement, we have brought back a one-day, in-person course in response to community requests. We understand that not everyone wants to learn online and we are excited to offer this option."

Instruction will be led by public health inspectors. Participants can complete the certification exam at the end of the course on the same day. The first course begins November 4, with spaces still available.
