Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) has partnered with the City of Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Confederation College, and EcoSuperior to kick off the 2025 edition of the Active Commute Challenge (ACC).
Confederation College hosted today’s launch event, which brought together community leaders, ACC partners, sponsors, and workplace champions to celebrate sustainable commuting, and to remind everyone that walking, biking, using public transit and carpooling are healthy habits that promote personal wellbeing and help to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
“Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions across the region. Reducing car use is key to achieving sustainability goals,” said Leena Pehkonen, Public Health Nurse at TBDHU and the coordinator of the Active Commute Challenge. “The Active Commute Challenge is a great way to engage in climate change action and experience first-hand the benefits of active transportation. Physical activity, including active transportation, supports physical and mental health and reduces stress,” added Pehkonen.
For the month of June, workplaces in Thunder Bay and across the district can log their sustainable commutes and compete to earn recognition and rewards for their efforts. Registration can be found at TBayOnTheMove.ca.
The active transportation initiative has gained significant traction over the past four years. Participants have noticed the positive impact on their physical and mental health, work-life balance, and environmental awareness.
“The Active Commute Challenge is an opportunity for individuals and workplaces to promote mental and physical health, take advantage of local walking and biking infrastructure, and make a measurable difference to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health and CEO at TBDHU. “The challenge contributes to healthier and more sustainable communities across the region,” added Dr. DeMille.
