Expanded eligibility for fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine

April 6, 2022 - Today, the Province announced that it is expanding eligibility for fourth doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals aged 60 and over as well as First Nation, Inuit and Metis individuals and their household members aged 18 and over will be eligible starting Thursday, April 7, 2022. Fourth doses, or second booster doses, are being offered to these individuals at a recommended interval of 5 months (140 days) after receiving their last booster. Eligible individuals can receive the fourth dose as early as 3 months (84 days) after their last booster if they choose.

Individuals who are immunocompromised and seniors living in congregate settings, such as long-term care homes, are already eligible for fourth doses.

The evidence shows that protection against severe disease and hospitalization from COVID-19 is higher in people who received a booster dose, however, immunity can wane over time, whether following vaccination or COVID-19 infection. An additional booster is beneficial in restoring that protection.

“With the BA.2 subvariant of omicron surging in many parts of country and province, it is important to ensure individuals most at risk have optimal protection against serious illness and hospitalization”, said Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health. “I strongly encourage older adults and other individuals who are more at risk of severe outcomes to get their fourth dose.”

TBDHU is actively working to accommodate this increased eligibility. Appointments will be available starting April 7th, and can be booked through the provincial booking system or by calling 1-833-943-3900.

TBDHU is also planning other opportunities for booster doses and more details will follow in coming days.

Appointments will also be available in the District communities this month and additional information on those will be available on the TBDHU website shortly.

Pharmacies and some primary care providers also provide COVID-19 vaccine to anyone who is eligible.

Stay tuned to the TBDHU website and social media for more information and announcements as details become available.
