Increased Access to First and Second Doses

June 25, 2021 - Earlier today, the Province announced further expansion of second doses eligibility as part of the accelerated second dose strategy for COVID-19 vaccines.

As of the morning of Monday June 28, at 8:00 AM, all individuals aged 18 and over who have received their first dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) are eligible to book an appointment for a second dose. Any second dose appointments must be at least 28 days following the first dose as per the recommended interval.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) have opened up additional appointments at both the CLE Coliseum and Bora Laskin Building for the coming weeks to accommodate this expanded eligibility. Eligible individuals can book appointments online or by calling 1-833-943-3900.

Other individuals who continue to be eligible to book appointments include:

  • Anyone 12 years of age and older who have not received a first dose Individuals who are 12 to 17 years old should select the CLE Coliseum clinic or another clinic where the Pfizer vaccine is available.
  • Individuals who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine as their first dose can book a second dose appointment provided their second dose appointment date is at least 8 weeks from the date of their first dose.

All eligible individuals as noted above can also sign up for our daily back-up list in the event there are extra doses available at the end of the day.

Individuals who received one mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as their first dose are able to receive the other for their second dose. Individuals are encouraged to get their second dose as soon as they are able.

Increased Access to First Doses at CLE Coliseum clinic in Thunder Bay:

Starting on Monday June 28, 2021, anyone who is 12 years of age and over can get their first dose by just showing up at the CLE Coliseum clinic in Thunder Bay. An appointment or pre-registration is not required. This is for first doses only. Pfizer will be available at every clinic for youth who are 12 to 17 years old.

In the District communities, the local Family Health Teams continue to deliver vaccine clinics, using the expanded criteria. For individuals in the District, please visit the TBDHU website for additional information and links to the Family Health Teams.

In addition to COVID-19 immunization clinics, individuals can also arrange for appointments at select pharmacies in the TBDHU area.
