TBDHU Offering Routine and Catch-up Vaccines for Children, Youth and Young Adults

July 5, 2023 - TBDHU is offering vaccine clinics throughout the summer months to encourage receiving and catching up on recommended routine vaccines that are normally given in infancy, SK/Grade 1, Grade 7 and 8 and high school. In July and August, walk-in clinics are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am-3 pm at TBDHU’s main office at 999 Balmoral Street in Thunder Bay. These clinics will offer routine vaccines to anyone in the following groups:

  • Preschool-aged children
  • School-aged children and youth
  • Those who finished high school June 2020 or after

Additional pop-up clinics for routine school-aged vaccines will be held at sites around Thunder Bay and in surrounding communities. The schedule for these pop-up clinics has been posted to TBDHU.COM/vaxclinics and will be updated as more sites are confirmed.

“Immunization is the best way to protect against serious diseases such as measles, tetanus and polio” says Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health for the TBDHU. “Measles was previously eliminated in Canada due to successful immunization programs; however, recently there have been cases in Canada and Ontario. It is important to ensure children and youth are up to date with routine vaccines to prevent them from getting these vaccine-preventable diseases.” Many children and youth are now due for specific vaccines and some have missed receiving vaccines because of the pandemic disruptions.

Before going to a clinic, parents and youth are encouraged to discuss their vaccine records by calling the Health Unit at 807-625-5900 and pressing 4. District residents can contact their health care provider or reach out to their closest TBDHU Branch office for more information about receiving or catching up on recommended routine vaccines.

TBDHU’s Community Vaccine Clinic at the CLE grounds in Thunder Bay has now closed for the summer and will re-open in the fall. Appointments for COVID-19 vaccines remain available at TBDHU’s main office and TBDHU’s Branch offices in District communities throughout July and August. Please see TBDHU.com/vaxclinics for more information about COVID-19 vaccines and appointments.
