Protecting the Thunder Bay District - Flu Vaccine

October 13, 2020 - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) is encouraging everyone to get their flu shot this year. Influenza, the ‘flu’, causes significant illness and deaths in Canada every year and getting the flu vaccine is the most effective way to reduce this risk. The upcoming flu season is further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the two viruses circulating, the risk to individuals is greater especially for those at higher risk due to age or underlying medical conditions.

Blue-Green Algae Identified at Surprise Lake

September 24, 2020 - The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae in a water sample collected at Surprise Lake in Gorham Township on September 16, 2020. The MECP is conducting toxin analysis on the water sample. However, it is important to remember that water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom is present, and for about 2 weeks after it has dissipated, regardless of the toxin analysis results because blue-green algae can turn toxin production on and off in response to environmental conditions.
