Flora’s Walk Returns for Maternal Mental Health Month

Thunder Bay joins over 50 cities across the nation supporting Flora’s Walk again this Saturday, May 3, in Canada’s largest perinatal mental health event.

Flora's Walk

Flora was a Canadian mother who tragically lost her life to undetected, undiagnosed, and untreated postpartum psychosis. Flora's Walk for Perinatal Mental Health is a community event that brings together individuals, families, and professionals to raise awareness about perinatal mental health, providing a platform for shared stories, resources, and support. Participants walk in solidarity, highlighting the importance of mental health during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, while fostering a sense of community, understanding, and empowerment.

The Thunder Bay Perinatal Coalition, led by TBDHU, is encouraging participation in the walk designed to call attention to the need for improved perinatal mental health care.

Date: Saturday, May 3, 2025
Location: Waverley Park, Thunder Bay (between Law School and Magnus Theatre)
Opening Remarks: 1:15 p.m.
Walk Start: 2:15 p.m.

In Canada, between 10 and 20 percent of pregnant women, new mothers, and the non-bearing parent report perinatal mental health concerns. In the Thunder Bay District, that number rises to 50%, compared to 23% in Ontario. These concerns can include postpartum depression, anxiety-related conditions, and serious mental health challenges like psychosis.

Mental illness during the perinatal period, if left untreated, can also affect birth outcomes and child development. Despite effective treatments for perinatal mental health, many cases go unaddressed in new and expectant parents.

For anyone or their loved on who is experiencing or suspects perinatal mental health challenges, they are not alone. Treatment options and supports are available. Visit TBDHU’s Maternal Mental Health page.
