Handbook Empowers Caregivers of Youth Who Use Substances

Thunder Bay District Health Unit has launched “Parents Like Us”, a locally informed and designed resource for families and caregivers of youth with substance use challenges.

Project partners gathered at Sister Margaret Smith Centre today to present and discuss the free handbook, which is available in printed and digital versions. TBDHU’s Substance Use Health Team collaborated with a multitude of caregivers and youth, including Indigenous voices and those with lived experience. The result is a practical and relatable resource that includes artwork, stories, and advice, imparting the wisdom and experience of its anonymous authors.

“This resource is a testament to the resilience of parents and caregivers who continue to show up, even in the most challenging circumstances,” said one contributing Thunder Bay parent. “It offers tools, guidance and hope to help navigate this journey.”

Themes include self-care tips, guidance on how to talk to a young person who uses substances, harm reduction strategies, and pathways for caregivers to access services. These pathways often cross over between health, social services, and the justice system.

“To fellow parents who are struggling with this situation, I want you to know you are not alone,” adds another contributing parent.

“The Thunder Bay Drug Awareness Committee was a key partner in developing the youth section in Parents Like Us,” says Stephanie Diebolt, Chair of the DAC and TBDHU Public Health Nurse. “We’ve had a positive and growing response from organizations across the district who are helping to promote and distribute it through their programming.”
