Medical Officer of Health Letter to Parents and Caregivers of School-Aged Children in the TBDHU Region

December 8, 2021

Dear Parents and Caregivers of School-Aged Children in the TBDHU Region:

I recognize that these are challenging times for everyone, and that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused much upheaval in our children’s lives. School disruptions and canceled activities have had an impact on the overall well-being of kids and their families. I know that we are all eager for everything to settle down and be closer to normal.

For those of you that haven’t already done so, I want to encourage you to consider the benefits of vaccinating your children against COVID-19. You would be joining over 3,000 children in the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) who already have their first dose and millions more across Canada and the United States. The vaccine reduces the risk of them getting COVID-19 and passing it on to others. While most children do recover easily if they get COVID-19, some can become so sick that they require hospitalization and/or suffer long-term illness. Vaccines work to shield your children from these possibilities. In addition, getting children vaccinated will also help keep schools and other activities safe.

Here are some important facts:

  • The children’s vaccine dose is one-third the dose for teens and adults.
  • In Ontario, the two doses are given 8 weeks apart to help boost the immune response and reduce the risk of side effects.
  • Common side effects are similar to other vaccines, such as mild pain at the injection site, headache, and fatigue. These can be managed with over-the counter, easily available pain relievers and most children feel better in 1-2 days.

As parents, we always want the best for our children, which is why I want to stress that vaccination is the number one thing you can do to keep your child safe from COVID-19. Health Canada completed a careful and thorough review prior to approval, and this vaccine is safe and effective.
